The Apartment (1960) A: C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) B: Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine)
[Miss Kubelik knocks frantically, fearing that the loud bang she has just heard is from a self-inflicted gunshot.] B: Mr. Baxter! Mr. Baxter! Mr. Baxter! [The door opens and there's Baxter with a just-opened bottle of champagne.] B: Oh. Are you all right? A: I'm fine. B: Are you sure? How's your knee? A: I'm fine all over. B: [sighs with relief] Mind if I come in? [Miss Kubelik comes in and of course understands the packing going on.] A: Let me get another glass. [Baxter unpacks a wine glass from a box.] B: Where are you going? A: Who knows? Another neighborhood, another town, another job. I'm on my own. B: That's funny. So am I. What did you do with the cards? A: In there. [Baxter indicates another box. Miss Kubelik takes the deck of playing cards. She sits on the couch and proceeds to shuffle the cards. Baxter sits and pours out the champagne.] A: What about Mr. Sheldrake? B: We'll send him a fruitcake every Christmas. Cut. A: I love you, Miss Kubelik. B: Three. Queen. A: Did you hear what I said, Miss Kubelik? I absolutely adore you. B: Shut up and deal.
The shaggy coat that Shirley MacLaine wore in the movie is Billy Wilder's wife Audrey's own coat.
